VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is remote control software which allows you to view and interact with one computer (the "server") using a simple program (the "viewer") on another computer anywhere on the LAN.

VNC has a wide range of applications including system administration, IT support and helpdesks. The two computers don’t even have to be the same type, so for example you can use VNC to view a Linux machine on your Windows PC. The connection can be through conventional Ethernet channels or infrastructure less Ad-Hoc networks using Wi-Fi. If your don’t want to hog the precious network bandwidth you can limit the number of colors to be viewed on the client. In a home environment it can act as a monitoring tool too. It is produced by the company RealVNC Ltd., which was founded by the same AT&T team that created the original VNC program. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X (Enterprise edition only), and many Unix-like operating systems, Free & Enterprise(Free BSD,Solaris,HP-UX 11/11i etc.) . There is also a RealVNC client which runs on the Java platform. Real VNC uses TCP port 5900 as default.

VNC is freely and publicly available and is in widespread active use by millions throughout industry, academia and privately. VNC is available for general use under the conditions of the GNU General Public License. If you have questions about VNC or want help getting started, please read the documentation
