Know your location on Mobile phone with/without GPS: Google Maps

August 6th, 2009 No comments

Google Maps is a free service from Google which shows you the driving directions. You need to activate GPRS/EDGE services from your service provider to use it effectively. It helps to determine your current location with or without GPS, by using the Location area code & Cell ID received from the nearby mobile towers. If you have a GPS receiver on the device, it will display the current location more accurately.

It is very useful at GPS shadow regions, where you can’t receive signals from at least 3 satellites, cloudy days, tree shadowed regions etc.

If you are reaching an unfamiliar town or city, the “Show directions” and “Search the Map” features are a great blessing. It routes you through the way just as a navigator. It can also switch between Map view and Satellite view.I’m using this feature in India for the past three months on Nokia E51. Here are some screenshots

The travelling time given is an estimation only, it depends on road condition, traffic etc.Google Latitude allows you to share your location information with your friends. So from a browser window you could know where you friends are. Easy-to-change privacy settings ensures that you can disable location aware services to avoid any privacy issues.

Google Latitude is a feature of Google Maps for mobile on these phones:

  • most Symbian S60 devices (Nokia smart phones)
  • iPhone and iPod touch devices New!
  • most color BlackBerry devices
  • most Windows Mobile 5.0+ devices
  • Android-powered devices, such as the T-Mobile G1

Go to http://google.com/gmm from your mobile smart phones to download the correct version for your device or go to this page to receive a text message with download link.

The major advantage is that Google Maps won’t drain your battery compared to GPS. The service is free, but you need to pay packet data charges. It needs Mobile phone network to operate whereas a GPS can be used anywhere on earth.

Zone Alarm : Best personal firewall

April 13th, 2009 No comments

Zone Alarm is a top-notch firewall with excellent hacker and virus protection capabilities.

ZoneAlarm

It is capable of protecting files and the system registry from illegitimate intrusions. It is able to monitor incoming and outgoing traffic, as well as specific ports in your computer.

Zone alarm can make your surfing faster by denying the automatic updates of any media players or any softwares. Anything and everything that connects to Internet asks your permission.

After installing you will have a few hours  of annoying pop-up windows from Zone Alarm asking you to set trusted programs and so on. But it will be over once the programs you use frequently are learned by Zone Alarm.

ZoneAlarm1

So you can effectively identify any malicious program, spywares & remote keystroke loggers and block them. This can help you to prevent an attack  on your computer by preventing malicious software from updating itself or downloading more and more malicious software.

A firewall should be considered as an essential software and Zone Alarm an essential first choice !

GParted: Free HDD Partitioning Utility

April 10th, 2009 1 comment

"GParted" is short for Gnome Partition Editor. This is an industrial-strength package for creating, destroying, resizing, moving, checking, and copying partitions and the filesystems on them; it lets you do just about anything and everything with drive partitions. This is very useful for creating space for new operating systems (such as when you wish to upgrade to Vista, which occupies a great deal of space), to reorganize disk space (such as redistributing it for specific purposes such that one partition may store software, one for music, one for videos, and one for games), to copy data that resides on the hard drive, or to simply mirror one partition with another (disk imaging or cloning).

You can do everything mentioned above without losing the data on the drive.

GParted is available for download from http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php; it is freeware, available in three different versions — binary, LiveCD, and LiveUSB, but we suggest you download the LiveCD version, since it is the most versatile — and it can be converted into a Live USB version if required.

You can right-click on a partition and click on Information to get detailed information about the partition or drive in question.
